A Patient Experience In Recovering Her Health

I am a Dietitian Who Lost 60 Lbs. In 6 Months

In today's online issue of Pyshcology Today, a patient of Dr. Kachko's shares her experience in regaining her health and working to maintain a healthy weight:

"I went to Dr. Kachko two years after I graduated from college. By that time, I had lost a total of 80 lbs.—an additional 20 lbs. on top of the original 60 lbs. But I was trapped in a frustrating, anxiety-ridden cycle, usually feeling lousy, and existing on just 1,000 calories per day.

Dr. Kachko is the one doctor I consulted who diagnosed that my body was metabolically impaired through metabolic testing. And he was specific, explaining that I had damage to my digestive system as well as major hormonal fluctuations (especially thyroid, adrenal, and blood sugar metabolism). Dr. Kachko also found that I had a tendency toward a subconscious fear-response. He noted that this, combined with long-term deficiencies in key nutrients, had led to my most troubling symptoms: intractable migraines, persistent nausea, and dizziness.

So, rather than just treating symptoms directly, addressing my metabolic issues proved to be the only sustainable way for me to feel well.

The first step on my journey was to gradually adopt a balanced diet of mostly fish, eggs, nuts, vegetables, lots of avocados, and fruit. Until then, I had been a strict vegan, but based on a metabolic impairment, Dr. Kachko opened up my mind to additional options."

Tips for Avoiding the Common Cold

Scared of catching a cold? Here are a few things you can do to keep yourself healthy this winter.

Supplement with vitamin D. Low levels of vitamin D have been linked to decreased immune function and increased risk of upper respiratory infections. Taken daily with a meal, vitamin D will keep you healthy and can prevent those winter blues.

Boost your immune system with healthy bugs. Probiotics are the healthy bacteria that live in our gut and help to keep the immune system balanced, fight infection and decrease the time needed to recover from a cold. Probiotics work in several ways to protect us. They help us to digest food, produce substances to protect our gut lining from invading bacteria, and help to outnumber the bad bacteria so they cannot proliferate and make us sick. Taking a probiotic supplement and eating fermented foods ensures that we get many different kinds of beneficial bacteria.

Avoid foods that deplete the immune system like sugar, alcohol and processed foods. These foods have been shown to increase inflammation in the body. As inflammation increases immune function decreases. Certain spices like turmeric, rosemary, garlic, oregano, ginger, among others have been shown to decrease inflammation and increase immune function. Adding these spices to our everyday cooking can give our immune system a little extra help. Mushrooms have medicinal properties that have been shown to increase the body’s natural immune system. Adding mushrooms like, shiitake or maitake, to soups and stews is an easy way to boost immunity. Increasing colorful veggies and fruit provides nutrients the body needs to fight off colds.

Taking a multivitamin daily will make sure your body is getting the essential nutrients it needs to function properly.

For your body to run efficiently you must stay hydrated. Dehydration leads to dry and cracked mucus membranes, which are our first line of defense against bacteria entering our body. Be sure to drink half your body weight in ounces of water daily. Adding fresh squeezed lemon, cucumber or some crushed berries will make this task easier to accomplish. Bone broths are packed with nutrients, taste great and also help to keep us hydrated. Herbal teas are another tasty, nutritious way to add to hydration status.

Always wash your hands. This is pretty much common sense and I'm sure you’ve heard it before but it can really help decrease your risk of catching a cold. When we touch surfaces that other people have touched we can pick up their germs. These germs can enter our body through our mucus membranes. Simply using soap and water before touching your face and especially before eating can help to prevent the spread of germs.

Other helpful tips include exercising regularly, going to bed before midnight and decreasing stress.

    Pregnancy Preparation

Research shows that a healthy pregnancy begins months prior to conception. It is in this pre-pregnancy time that a mom-to-be can begin healthy lifestyle choices. Especially important are improving the basics of health, such as diet, sleep, exercise and relaxation work, to help ensure a healthy start for the baby and a safe pregnancy for the mother.
Throughout the pregnancy it is important to maintain a healthy weight for your height and body type. Gentle exercise and a healthy diet will keep your body functioning at an optimal level. Nutrient-dense foods can help achieve this goal while avoiding excess weight gain, which would decrease the risk of blood sugar problems while pregnant, known as gestational diabetes.
Methylated folate may be the most important supplement needed for women of childbearing age. A minimum of 400 mcg per day is needed before and during pregnancy in order to prevent neural tube defects, such as spina bifida. What most doctors do not even know is that common folic acid, the form found in most prenatal vitamins, may actually be useless to some woman who posses a defect in their MTHFR gene. This gene is needed to convert inactive folic acid to the active form, methylfolate. When the gene is defective, it can also lead to blood clots during pregnancy and miscarriages. A simple blood test can identify women with MTHFR defects. For all pre-pregnant, and pregnant women, excellent natural sources of the right folate forms include: beans, lentils, spinach, asparagus, and avocado.
For the best care be sure to speak to your doctor regarding a prenatal vitamin and healthy lifestyle habits.

Gluten Free: Is It a Fad? - Dr. Bongiorno interviewed by FOX NEWS

Is Gluten free really worth it?

    12.08.2011

Remember when ‘low-carb’ foods were all the rage?

These days, the ‘gluten-free’ section inside your grocery store is the new hot spot.

“Gluten is a protein that occurs in wheat and wheat products, so things like spelt, rye and barley,” said Dr. Peter Bongiorno of Innersource Health in N.Y.

“When our bodies see the gluten, it needs to break it down, and it takes fairly strong enzymes to do that.
Some people are sensitive to gluten, which means when the gluten protein gets into their digestive tract, the immune system sees it and creates a response to it.”

Over the past several years, going gluten-free has been promoted as a way to boost health and energy, lose weight or as a coping method for attention deficit disorder and autism.

“I think in many cases, people are eating way too much (gluten),” Bongiorno said. “People are starting to notice that when they take the gluten out of their diet, a lot of symptoms for different conditions that they have tend to disappear.”

    Those conditions include:
    - Depression and mood problems
    - Eczema
    - Fibromyalgia
    - Chronic fatigue
    - Irritable bowel syndrome
    - Headaches

So should everyone say goodbye to gluten in their diet?

“I think it's a little bit of a fad, but I think there's good reason for it,” Bongiorno said. “Any food that you eat constantly and continuously, after a while your body starts to say ‘no more’ and starts to creat an inflammatory reaction to it. I would say if you're looking at your diet and you see yourself eating gluten two or three times a day, then it's probably worth getting rid of it for a little while. It'll probably have beneficial effects.”
Most gluten products are “empty calories,” according to Bongiorno, so cutting them from your diet will also help you lose weight.

“Obesogens” Really, pollution and toxins make me fat?
by dr. peter and dr. pina

    April 12, 2011

For the longest time, medicine thought weight gain was simply a process of too many calories in (by eating too much) and not burning enough calories via exercise. Then, more thoughtful research added stress as a factor for not being able to lose weight due to slowing of metabolic function. Even though calories in, exercise, and stress are all still very important factors in the battle of the bulge, fascinating new research is coming out which we think is exciting: studies are showing us how toxic compounds in our environment can also make you and keep you fat.

Known as ‘obesogens’, these are chemicals not natural to your body. Because the body cannot easily get rid of them, they dirsrupt the normal control and growth of fat cells and energy. These chemicals, some known as ‘endocrine disruptors’ will also mess around with the body’s ability to regulate its hormones. Chemicals included are dioxins, phtalates, Bisphenol A and PCB’s, and POPs (persistent organic pollutants), but there are many more.

What your mom ate and was exposed to may have set your fat cells early on: it has been shown that obesity is programmed early in life - when you were in the womb. While in the womb, exposure to chemicals can play a role by changing how the genes that form fat can be turned on to produce more cells – this event can cause a life-long struggle to keep to a healthy weight. This challenge can be made worse when a SAD (Standard American Diet) food regime is followed, and exercise is skipped.

So what can you do? Well, we have seen many patients do well to change their body by not only changing their foods and exercising, but by also encouraging their body to get rid of these ‘obesogen’ chemicals. A good detoxification regimen designed for the individual can be very helpful to lose weight with greater success than simply dieting can do, even if the number of calories are not different. In fact, a good detoxification program does not even carry the concern about how many calories are being consumed – which means that as long as it is the right detoxifying foods, you can eat as much as you feel necessary, and still get the weight loss effect you desire.

Obesogens are a fairly new concept – more research is needed. But we can learn from the idea and use this information to stave off obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancers, and more.
