Chronic Pain: You're Not Alone

Introducing the Reframing Pain Program

Dealing with chronic pain is a tremendous (and all too common) challenge. Doing so alone is even more difficult. Research shows that a comprehensive approach that considers multiple components of wellness is essential to a pain-free life. At InnerSource Health, we're committed to providing you with the latest information that you need for any health concern. That's why we've designed the Reframing Pain Program to help you navigate life with chronic pain.

The good news is that it works:

A “psychosocial” approach to chronic pain that takes you and your personal needs into account in addition to your physical condition is essential

Self-management helps people dealing with chronic pain to have a better mood

Mindfulness meditation can reduce pain

The right types of safe physical activity can reduce pain

An anti-inflammatory diet can reduce pain if combined with a comprehensive lifestyle change

A Patient Experience In Recovering Her Health

I am a Dietitian Who Lost 60 Lbs. In 6 Months

In today's online issue of Pyshcology Today, a patient of Dr. Kachko's shares her experience in regaining her health and working to maintain a healthy weight:

"I went to Dr. Kachko two years after I graduated from college. By that time, I had lost a total of 80 lbs.—an additional 20 lbs. on top of the original 60 lbs. But I was trapped in a frustrating, anxiety-ridden cycle, usually feeling lousy, and existing on just 1,000 calories per day.

Dr. Kachko is the one doctor I consulted who diagnosed that my body was metabolically impaired through metabolic testing. And he was specific, explaining that I had damage to my digestive system as well as major hormonal fluctuations (especially thyroid, adrenal, and blood sugar metabolism). Dr. Kachko also found that I had a tendency toward a subconscious fear-response. He noted that this, combined with long-term deficiencies in key nutrients, had led to my most troubling symptoms: intractable migraines, persistent nausea, and dizziness.

So, rather than just treating symptoms directly, addressing my metabolic issues proved to be the only sustainable way for me to feel well.

The first step on my journey was to gradually adopt a balanced diet of mostly fish, eggs, nuts, vegetables, lots of avocados, and fruit. Until then, I had been a strict vegan, but based on a metabolic impairment, Dr. Kachko opened up my mind to additional options."

R U Inflamed? Dr. Peter Bongiorno interviewed at Dirt to Dinner

10.06.2016

R U Inflamed? Dr. Peter Bongiorno interviewed on this "hot" topic where he connects digestion, fat tissue in our body and toxins: “fat tissue will create inflammation that uses up nutrients and makes it more challenging for your body to clear toxins. It also switches how cells grow and use energy. “

Sense & Sensitivity

8.2.16: Dr. Kachko was interviewed about food sensitivity

Dr. Kachko was interviewed by Natural Practitioner Magazine on the impact of food allergy and sensitivity on overall health:

"Additives and preservatives can certainly create intolerances. For example, said Robert Kachko ND, LAc of InnerSource Health, New York, people of all ages are beginning to react negatively to added hormones and elevated casein content of conventional dairy products. “We see this very often in children who are hyperactive or suffer from chronic ear infections, eczema, asthma etc., in addition to allergies. Some of the most common food additives which can serve as allergens include sulfites, aspartame, parabens, tartrazine, benzoates, nitrates/nitrites and BHT/BHA.”

ALZHEIMER’S & HYPERINSULINEMIA: THE NATUROPATHIC DIETARY TOOL KIT

"Alzheimer’s disease (AD) has the historically unique distinction of being the only common chronic disease with no known prevention or cure. This proposition becomes increasingly ominous when considering the rising tide of Alzheimer’s expected to impact North America and the rest of the world in the next several decades. In the United States, 5.3 million people currently have AD (making up 75-80% of all dementia cases), and that number is expected to climb to a medically and economically unsustainable 13.8 million people by 2050.1

The idea that AD is recalcitrant to all interventions is grounded in a belief that has been largely disproven within the last decade – that the nervous system is static and categorically unchangeable. The large cost and consistency of failed drug trials over the last several decades leads us to 1 central conclusion: Alzheimer’s disease is a multifactorial phenomenon which develops over several decades prior to the onset of symptoms and is, in large part, a result of lifestyle."

The Eyes Have it

Dr. Kachko was interviewed by Natural Practitioner Magazine

Dr. Kachko was recently interviewed by Natural Practitioner Magazine for their segment on eye health. If you have concerns about keeping your eyes healthy as you age, make sure to schedule a wellness visit!

...Dr. Kachko agreed, noting that the increased number of devise usage (multiple devices) keeps us more connected than ever and always “on.” Therefore, eyes rarely get a break. “This is especially dangerous when device usage is right before bed or first thing in the morning when our eyes haven’t yet adjusted to light. It’s important for our eyes to take in just the right amount of light, which is why our pupils constrict when entering a bright room. Having these devices around all of the time, very close to our faces, is a big risk. Especially because the main light emitted is blue on the wavelength spectrum, which increases the activity of active beta brain waves and reduces our own production of melatonin, the essential sleep hormone.”...

Sleep In? Or Hit The Gym?

Dr. Kachko's featured article for Robert Irvine Magazine

Sleep: the great equalizer. It’s our proverbial “reset switch”. We quite literally can’t live without it, and yet societal pressures often force us to forego sufficient sleep in lieu of a perpetual need to accomplish more: make more money, have more friends, make more of ourselves. This desire to acquire comes at tremendous cost though: less long-term quality of life. The quantity and quality of sleep we get is connected to the dietary choices we make, and in a cyclical fashion those same dietary choices can impact how we sleep. Finding a way to break this cycle is a crucial step in regaining optimal health for those who get less-than-optimal rest.

How Nature Can Impact Your Health - A Naturopathic Perspective

Dr. Kachko was interviewed by the Association of Accredited Naturopathic Medical Colleges about the impact of nature on health outcomes in his patients.

Here's an excerpt:

"It's impossible and most often detrimental to understand optimal health without considering how each patient interacts with nature in their daily lives.

While we’re working on ways to better understand genetics in a clinically relevant way, changing the person’s environment is our most important tool. It is very important to make sure that people fit a relationship with nature into their regular schedule.

Working in New York City often makes that more difficult than when I’m seeing patients in Connecticut. However, even getting my patients to walk home from work instead of taking the subway (extra points for walking through Central Park!) has been a positive incremental change."

The Benefits and Risks of Dandelion Tea

Dr. Kachko was interviewed on the benefits of this wonderful herb

"The compounds in the root "stimulate digestion, increase bile flow and can act as mild laxatives," says naturopath Dr. Robert Kachko, ND, LAc. This part of the dandelion works on regulating the liver and stimulating digestion. "Most conditions of the liver/gallbladder can have a use for dandelion root, but it should be prescribed by someone with training," cautions Kachko. The leaf is used to treat ailments of the kidneys its chief function is as a diuretic. However, unlike prescription medication, it is high in potassium -- so it replenishes lost electrolytes immediately. In high enough doses, its effect is similar to that of common prescription diuretics like Lasix. "It also may reduce the occurrence of urinary tract infections in women," says Dr. Kachko. "

How To Prevent Prostate Cancer Through Proper Nutrition

June is Men's Health Month

"Prostate cancer, and all cancer for that matter, can be prevented. While there’s certainly a genetic component to disease progression, the majority of our health outcomes are firmly within our control. Epigenetic (literally meaning “above the genes”) research is beginning to elucidate what we’ve known in Naturopathic Medicine for years: health promoting choices lead to longer, healthier, and happier lives. Since we are in so many ways “what we eat”, any rational approach to cancer prevention must start with health promoting nutritional choices...."

Rewiring the Chronic Pain Brain

Pain can be unlearned. Here's how...

"...In the case of chronic pain which cannot be explained though, there is no such adaptive advantage. Instead, chronic pain exists in large part because our brains (specifically our “sensory cortex”) have been rewired to perceive danger even when it ceases to exist. To take that idea a step further, the area where we would feel “hand pain” actually grows in size at the expense of other crucial neurological functions. This concept is well aligned with the relatively novel idea of neuroplasticity: new connections can be made as our brain has new experiences and processes new data. While this can be beneficial in the recovery of function after traumatic brain injury or stroke, it can have a negative impact as well: we can program ourselves to experience a continual cycle of discomfort with no known cause...."

A Context for Hope in Evidence-Based Care

Is "hope" the most taboo word in mainstream medicine?

"We live in an era where the phrase “patient centered care” has been nearly wrung dry in the service of healthcare related socio-political progress. In order to stay true to the rhetoric though, our job as clinicians is to foster an environment which supports rather than rejects the role of self-reflection in the patient experience. This is the new definition of being on the cutting edge, and as the body of available research grows I suspect that the concept will no longer be reduced to the blind faith of those with nothing left to lose."

Science Is Starting to Catch Up to Naturopathic Wisdome

we are finally learning what Aunt Lillie already knew

03.22.2013

My hearty and hale 92 year-old Aunt Lillie remains the healthful life of the party. In fact, a few weeks ago, she led the sing along for my parents’ 55th anniversary. When I was a kid, I remember her telling us to eat our broccoli and eat plenty of fish. She also warned us to stay away from margarine - she made it a point to say: ‘as long as I’m alive, only BUTTER will be eaten in this house!”

As a kid, I did like fish, but never really gravitated towards green vegetables. I also had no problem slathering margarine all over a piece of Wonder bread.

Today, as a naturopathic physician, I realize it was not only just Aunt Lillie who appreciated the benefits of healthy foods at a time when it was not very fashionable. During my childhood and adolescent years (of the 60’s through the 1980’s), while I was eating at Burger King anytime I had the chance, there was a subculture of ‘health fanatic’ naturopathic physicians who believed that whole and organic food were vitally important to health. They were also persecuted for telling people not to take wonder drugs, for the body can heal with natural means. People like Dr. John Bastyr (for whom my naturopathic medical school Bastyr University in Seattle is named after) held this thoughtful space and carried natural medicine, virtually by themselves, until the rest of society could catch up....

FLU: Natural Remedies That Work

reprint from 2009 blog

1 - Observe the recommendations to WASH HANDS thoroughly. Use warm water.

2 - DO NOT TOUCH FACE and NOSE to avoid spreading virus to your mouth, eyes or respiratory system.

3 - Take your FISH OIL – fish oil is known to balance an over-inflammed immune system, and may be helpful to lower the overall cytokine cascade. Cod liver oil may be the best choice for it has extra D and A. Vitamin A helps protect respiratory passages and is anti-viral itself.

4 - VITAMIN D, VITAMIN C, ZINC – may be useful. According to Johnathan Wright MD, vitamin C and D may be a more potent anti-viral choice than even medications. Zinc is an anti-viral mineral that has inhibited viral replication in research.

5 - STRESS REDUCTION helps to lower our stress hormones and balance our immune function to help properly deal with any virus.

6 - Get plenty of SLEEP – sleep is another important immune balancer which has been shown, when 7 hour or more, to help fight virus by 300% over people who do not get 7hours of sleep

7 - AVOID SUGAR – which can lower your immunity and allow easier catching of any virus.

8 - Consider regular NASAL WASHES – if the virus is typically transmitted into the upper respiratory tract, clearing that area may help lower the load that enters our system.

9 - AVOID INFLAMMATORY FOODS – foods like milk and dairy, wheat for some people, and any food you know you are sensitive too. Excess inflammation in your body may contribute to more of an inflammatory cascade than is healthy.

10 - EAT ANTI VIRAL FOODS: garlic, onions, berries, green tea.

11 - There are a few ANTI-VIRAL HERBS worth considering. Licorice, PauD’Arco and Lemon Balm. These have a history of being helpful with flu and colds. There is no research using these in this swine flu period in place of conventional medications and we are not suggesting forgoing conventional medicines.

12 - EXERCISE – helps move your lymph tissue and blood in your body, which is needed to keep your immune surveillance at its best.

From a naturopathic perspective, we may need to address the underlying causes of these viral illnesses.
