Food and Your Genetics
Monday, July 12, 2010, 6:30 – 9:30 p.m.
Natural Gourmet Institute- New York City
It’s fun to think of eating as an exciting taste adventure, and of course what we eat also supplies the nutrients essential to our well-being and the calories that keep us going. But at a deeper level, foods contain vast amounts of information in a language our genes understand – and obey. Incredible as it seems, what we put on our plates actually contributes to, or modifies, the functioning of our DNA. You’ll be amazed to discover how foods can influence dramatic changes – helping to cause, heal, or prevent a disease by turning specific genes on or off. Dr. Bongiorno will explain clearly and simply how genes and food work together. Join him to learn how we can help our genes make great decisions on our behalf, and how to make truly informed choices about eating for health.

| Marriage: best for health? | |
| July 11, 2010 |
Overall, it seems marriage helps a person live longer. But interestingly, the research is somewhat mixed and seems to suggest marriage is better for the man, than for the woman. Possibly, it is thought this could be because men may engage in more risky behavior as a single person than a woman would.
According to one 2006 study sampling over 66,000 people, the death rate for people who were unmarried was significantly higher than it was for those who were married and living with their spouses.
But, much research suggests that generally, men may live longer when married - although, some studies have shown that married men tend to gain weight, which will have a negative impact on health.
Age disparity makes a difference: for women, for best results it may be helpful to marry a man of exactly her same age for an older husband shortens her life, and a younger one even more so. While marrying a younger woman tends to increase life expectancy for a man, women marrying a partner seven to nine years younger increase their mortality risk by 20 percent (in the United States, on average a groom is 2.3 years older than his bride). Also, by the time divorced men reach age 50, they can expect their health to deteriorate much faster than the health of those who are married.
Speculations for better health with marriage include increased sexual relations and better social support, which has been shown to help the immune system. One analysis in the British Medical Journal in 1997, showed that in a study of 918 men, those who had sex two or more times per week had a mortality risk less than half what it was for those who had sex less than once a month.

Want A Better Brain? Shrink That Stomach
 | 7-4-10 |
by Peter Bongiorno ND, LAc and Pina LoGidiudice ND, LAc
Homer, watch those doughnuts (doh!).
A significant inverse association between abdominal obesity and total volume of the brain in a computed tomography (CT scan) study of 733 people called the Framingham Offspring cohort published in the Annals of Neurology. The visceral fat (fat around and built up in the organs) are most associated with a smaller brain.
It is postulated that caloric excess increases insulin (the hormone responsible for putting sugar in the cells from the blood), which is a strong factor in depositing body fat. Increases in visceral fat around the organs increase inflammation in the body, which can cause neuronal loss in the brain.
So what’s wrong with having a smaller brain full of inflammation? These factors are associated with a higher risk of dementia, mood disorders, and a host of other cognitive problems.

| DAIRY FARM VISIT | |
| Drs. P visit the land of the grass fed and free range... |
April 11, 2010
Litchfield, CT - although we really stay away from cow's milk products, it was a treat to visit a dairy farm in Litchfield, CT. Thanks to Dr. Peter's brother Joseph, we visited a working dairy farm and met the farmer and his wife, and two kids. How wonderful to see cows roaming free eating grass, and free range chickens walking amongst us, then going to their hen-house producing their eggs. Actually, the only reason they are in their hen-house is to protect them at night from other animals that may want to eat them. Sophia loved chasing the chickens, but she was a little scared of Bruno the cow (pictured right). Please visit our facebook site for more pictures.

SOY: GOOD or BAD?
Sunday, March 28, 2010
Some people seem to think soy can cause cancer. The fact is soy does contain ‘phytoestrogens’. But we need to look closely at the research. These are plant chemicals that act like a very weak estrogen molecule (which is how tamoxifen, a breast cancer drug, works as well). These weak estrogens actually block the more aggressive, cancer-causing estrogens – as such, they lower the effect of cancer-causing estrogens. Additionally, soy isoflavones also help shut off genes that can cause cancer by acting as a methylator, which can lock up cancer genes so they are not expressed.
One nested case-controlled study from 2008 looked at over 24,000 Japanese women and found that those with the highest soy isoflavone level had the lowest cancer rates. Breast cancer in Western countries is much higher than Asia – where isoflavone levels is about 0.5% of that in the Asian countries. When consumed in very large amounts, soy may block thyroid, inhibit mineral absorption, or even become allergenic, but eaten in reasonable amounts, this is not typical.

Chronic Kidney Disease Helped with household item
July 16, 2009
Daily supplementation with common sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) slows the progression rate of renal failure to end-stage renal disease and improves nutritional status among patients with chronic kidney disease. According to a recent study of 134 patients using 600 mg of oral sodium bicarbonate tablets, the patients taking the baking soda had lowered need for drugs and felt better using this simple and common kitchen ingredient.
It is possible the balancing of patient"s blood to become less acidotic (acidic) may be the reason for the benefit.
Although intake of sodium was higher for the sodium bicarbonate patients versus the control group, there was no increased blood pressure. For best safety, patients with kidney disease should speak to their medical doctors or nephrologists before starting a new regimen.
